Tidal action and macroalgal photosynthetic activity prevent coastal acidification in an eutrophic system within a semi-desert region

چکیده

Nutrient input drive macroalgal blooms and increases in photosynthetic activity coastal ecosystems. An intense can increase the surrounding pH it could prevent acidification that often follows an eutrophication process. We tested this hypothesis with field sampling experiments a macrotidal (up to 9 m amplitude) system within semi-desert region contrasting eutrophic conditions Ulva lactuca northern Argentinean Patagonia (San Antonio Bay). Our results indicate daily variability during low tide be controlled by of under conditions. At seasonal scale, variations were related environmental features, particularly seawater temperature. Both (i.e. high solar radiation, negligible freshwater inputs large tidal action) anthropogenic nutrient into studied area promote blooms, which turn well oxygenated through activity. study shows instead being driver acidification, contribute its prevention marine systems located regions.

Microbial Diversity of a Brazilian Coastal Region Influenced by an Upwelling System and Anthropogenic Activity

BACKGROUND Upwelling systems are characterised by an intense primary biomass production in the surface (warmest) water after the outcrop of the bottom (coldest) water, which is rich in nutrients. Although it is known that the microbial assemblage plays an important role in the food chain of marine systems and that the upwelling systems that occur in southwest Brazil drive the complex dynamics o...

Seasonal dynamics of cyanobacteria in a eutrophic reservoir (Arcoverde) in a semi-arid region of Brazil.

Environmental conditions favor the predominance of dense populations of cyanobacteria in reservoirs in northeastern Brazil. The aim of this study was to understand cyanobacterial population dynamics in the rainy and dry seasons at two depths in the Arcoverde reservoir. Microalgae and cyanobacteria samples were collected during 24 hours with intervals of 4 hours (nycthemeral) at sub-surface and ...
